Chinoso Government.

Out of a total budgut of nearly £3,000,000 for

foreign countries the Council spend over £145,000

directly on China (i.c. not including China's share of

overheads). This sum can be broken down as follows:

Salaries, runt and maintenance

76,000

Followships, studentships

42,500

Visitors to United Kingdom

7,500

Books and periodicals

7,800

Subsidised posts at universitics

otc.

4,500

Sino British Societics

2,500

Lectures

2,200

Total

143,000

The very large amount of money spent on students (which does not include the cost of passages) is a special feature of the Council's China budget, justifiod by the oxceptional importance of the

intellectual class in China and the financial chaos

that makes it unprofitable to spend sterling in China. Future developments depends very much on how sɔɔn the expenditure on personnel and maintenance can be roduced to more reasonable proportions. It is hopod to increase the number of subsidised posts and, in a

year or so, to reopen an office in West China (probably

An office in South China may follow

at Chongtu).
